About

Fritz Haber was a German chemist whose career left both a scientific legacy and historical controversy. He received the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the synthesis of ammonia — the Haber–Bosch process, developed with Carl Bosch — which made industrial production of fertilizers viable and supported food production on a global scale. The innovation also enabled the manufacture of precursors for explosives, profoundly changing the chemical industry of the twentieth century.

Beyond the ammonia synthesis, Haber contributed to the thermodynamics of gaseous reactions and to methods for estimating lattice energy in ionic solids, being among the proponents of the Born–Haber cycle. He published influential technical works and carried out much of his research at the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem.

During the First World War, he organized the chemical warfare department of the German ministry and took part in the development and deployment of toxic gases in military operations, a fact that earned him the label “father of chemical warfare” and provoked intense personal and public reactions. In his final years he faced Nazi persecution because of his Jewish origin and died in 1934 in Switzerland.
