Garrett List

About

Garrett List was an American trombonist, vocalist and composer whose career combined performance, teaching and experimental collaboration. Educated at institutions including California State University, Long Beach and Juilliard, he became known for joining the European collective Musica Elettronica Viva in 1971, an influential avant‑garde group that explored improvisation and electronics.

Throughout his career he recorded and took part in works with avant‑garde composers and performers, appearing on releases such as Creative Orchestra Music (1976) and collaborating with figures like Frederic Rzewski and La Monte Young. His discography includes solo releases and chamber works that move between contemporary composition and free improvisation.

In the 1980s he also turned to teaching, joining the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Liège in Belgium, where he maintained an active pedagogical and artistic role into later years. His legacy lies in bridging the trombone tradition and the experimental practices of the late twentieth century, evident both in recordings and in his influence on generations of performers and composers.
