Gary Adrian Condit is an American politician from California, a member of the Democratic Party, who represented the 18th district in the United States Congress from 1989 to 2003. Before arriving in the House, he built a career in local and state politics — including terms as mayor of Ceres and service in the State Assembly and on the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors — which established him as a figure in California’s Central Valley.
In Congress, Condit was a senior member of the Intelligence Committee and aligned with the Blue Dog Democrats, taking more conservative stances on several economic and security issues. He voted against measures such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the rollback of financial protections, and opposed military intervention in Kosovo and the Iraq War.
His congressional career was marked by repeated reelection until 2002, when he lost the Democratic primary. Condit’s national notoriety grew in 2001 due to his personal involvement in a highly publicized case, which damaged his public image and contributed to the decline of his political career. He is remembered both for his political work and for the episode that overshadowed his years in Congress.
