About
Gene Markey was an American writer, screenwriter and producer who moved between journalism, Hollywood and the United States Navy. He began his career as a journalist and caricaturist, published novels in tune with the spirit of the Jazz Age and a collection of literary caricatures, before moving into film at the end of the 1920s, with credits on films such as King of Burlesque and as producer of Wee Willie Winkie.
During World War II he distinguished himself in naval service: he donated his boat for military use, served in intelligence alongside Admiral William Halsey at Guadalcanal, was promoted to commodore and later to rear admiral, and received decorations such as the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star with Combat V. After the war he served as special assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.
Married four times, he became an influential figure in Hollywood social circles and, after 1952, joined Kentucky high society in the turf world when he married the heiress of Calumet Farm. He divided his life between writing, entertaining and raising racehorses, leaving a legacy as a bridge between American cultural and military spheres in the twentieth century.
