About

George Stanley McGovern was an American politician, diplomat, and historian, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party in the 1960s and 1970s. He served as a representative and senator for South Dakota, where he became known as a voice of modern liberalism in Congress. He rose to national prominence for his vigorous opposition to the escalation of the Vietnam War and for his role in reforms of the presidential nomination process promoted by the McGovern–Fraser Commission.

His public career included serving as director of the Food for Peace program in the Kennedy administration and as chair of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, positions in which he launched campaigns to combat hunger and improve nutritional guidelines in the United States. In 1972 he was the Democratic nominee for President, a campaign marked by broad grassroots mobilization, internal controversies, and a resounding electoral defeat.

After leaving the Senate, he remained active internationally on issues related to food security, serving as an envoy to U.N. agencies and working on programs that contributed to the creation of school-feeding initiatives. His legacy is associated with raising awareness about hunger and nutrition and with reforming party processes in the United States.
