About

Georges Carpentier was one of France’s leading boxers in the early 20th century, best known for holding the world light-heavyweight title from 1920 to 1922. He began his career as a teenager and within a few years won national and European titles across several divisions—from welterweight to heavyweight—demonstrating versatility and a knack for decisive knockouts.

His career featured moves up in weight and high-profile fights: after winning European honors, he paused his boxing to serve in World War I and returned to cement his reputation by knocking out Battling Levinsky to claim the world light-heavyweight crown. His bid for the sport’s ultimate prize culminated in the famous 1921 bout against Jack Dempsey, in which he was knocked out.

Carpentier remained active at a top level until the mid-1920s, retiring in 1926. His contribution to the sport was recognized posthumously with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991, placing him among the great names of classical boxing.
