About
Gilbert “Gib” Ford was an American basketball player and executive whose career combined high-level athletic achievement with corporate leadership. A graduate of the University of Texas, he served as co-captain of the college team and played a key role in the seasons that led the Longhorns to a share of the Southwest Conference title; his youth career included awards in Texas high school basketball and induction into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
After college he joined prominent teams of the era, such as the Phillips 66 Oilers, winning national titles in the industrial and amateur circuits. While serving in the Air Force he competed on military teams that advanced to the Olympic qualifying rounds, culminating in his participation in the 1956 Olympic Games, where the U.S. team won the gold medal.
Beyond his athletic career, Ford built a long executive career at Converse, where he worked for 35 years and rose to CEO and chairman. He also served in trade bodies for the sporting goods sector, helped create the Super Show—the industry’s largest trade fair—and held seats on significant industry and cultural boards.
