About

Gilles Blanchard is a French painter, known for his artistic and personal partnership with photographer Pierre Commoy in the duo known as Pierre et Gilles. Since 1976 the pair have produced hybrid images in which Commoy’s photographs are hand-painted by Blanchard, creating carefully staged studio scenes with models ranging from friends and family to public figures.

The work of Pierre et Gilles moves between art history and popular culture, exploring religious and mythological themes as well as contemporary icons, and has appeared on record covers, in music videos and in advertising. Their collaborative work has earned them solo exhibitions and retrospectives at major institutions — including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the New Museum — and awards such as the Grand Prix de Photographie de la Ville de Paris.

Over the course of his career, his output sparked public debate about representation and censorship, notably in 2012 with the work Vive la France, which caused controversy when it was displayed on city posters. Blanchard’s distinctive aesthetic, marked by painting over photography and the theatricality of his sets, has left a lasting mark on contemporary iconography and on the relationship between photography and painting.
