About

Glenn Gould (born Glenn Herbert Gold) was a Canadian pianist and a central figure in twentieth‑century classical music. Best known for his interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach, he was noted for extraordinary technical precision and contrapuntal clarity, and for a repertoire that ranged from pre‑Baroque composers to twentieth‑century figures.

Known for unconventional repertory choices—eschewing much of the Romantic literature in favor of Bach, Beethoven and modern composers—Gould built a career that transformed studio performance. At 31 he abandoned the life of a touring concert pianist to devote himself to recording and to producing radio and television content about music.

Beyond his work as a performer, he wrote musicological texts, produced audio documentaries (the so‑called Solitude Trilogy) and hosted programs that blended speech and music. His eccentric personality, practice methods and posture at the piano made him a singular figure whose influence endures in how people think about interpretation, recording and the mediation of classical music.
