About

Gregg Araki is an American filmmaker associated with the New Queer Cinema movement, whose work is known for portrayals of marginalized youth, ambiguous sexuality, and a punk‑underground aesthetic. He began his career in independent film with extremely low‑budget productions in the 1980s and early 1990s, earning critical recognition despite scarce resources and often improvised shooting methods.

His “Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy” — Totally F***ed Up (1993), The Doom Generation (1995), and Nowhere (1997) — cemented his reputation for depicting teenagers in crisis and for a provocative tone that divided critics and audiences, becoming a cult reference. Araki also gained attention with Mysterious Skin (2004), a darker adaptation of Scott Heim’s novel, and with the stoner comedy Smiley Face (2007), which demonstrated his tonal range.

In 2010, Kaboom premiered at Cannes and won the inaugural Queer Palm, reaffirming his role in the LGBTQ+ film scene. His filmography frequently features prominent shoegaze soundscapes and recurring collaborations with emerging producers and casts. Beyond cinema, Araki returned to television with the series Now Apocalypse (2019).
