Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker and writer.
Raised by his grandmother, Del Toro developed an interest in film as a teenager. Later, he learned about effects and makeup from Dick Smith (who had worked on The Exorcist and on several short films).
His first success was Cronos, in 1992, a film that won nine awards in Mexico and became a hit at Cannes.
Following Cronos's success, he directed a Hollywood film, Mimic (1997), starring Mira Sorvino.
He achieved stardom with Pan's Labyrinth (O Labirinto do Fauno), a dark fantasy film similar to The Devil's Backbone (A Espinha do Diabo), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.
