Harry Frommermann

About

Harry Frommermann, born Max Harry Frommermann, was a German singer and arranger of Jewish origin, best known as the founder and third tenor of the vocal ensemble Comedian Harmonists. He conceived the group by recruiting voices for an ensemble inspired by American vocal groups, and he wrote many of the arrangements and refrains that gave the ensemble its light, polished, and international character. Under his musical leadership, the group achieved enormous success in Germany and on European tours beginning in 1928.

As the Nazi regime advanced and antisemitic policies took hold, the Comedian Harmonists were banned from performing in 1935, leading to the group's dissolution in Germany and the emigration of its Jewish members. Frommermann pursued an international career, spending time in Vienna and New York and attempting to recreate vocal ensembles, but he faced difficulties caused by the war, lack of resources, and unstable lineups.

After World War II he worked as a translator and collaborated with the media in Berlin, and later attempted various artistic and commercial projects in Europe and the United States. Recognized for his central role in creating one of the most influential vocal groups of the interwar period, Frommermann left a legacy in the history of European popular music, associated with the refinement of vocal arrangements and the memory of the Comedian Harmonists.
