About

Heinrich George, stage name of Georg August Friedrich Hermann Schulz, was one of the best-known German actors of the 1920s–1940s, with an established career in theatre and film. Trained on the stages of major houses such as the Deutsches Theater and the Volksbühne, he became noted for roles in landmark films of the period, including Metropolis (1927) and the adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz (1931), and was active in festivals and in companies seeking artistic renewal.

Initially associated with the left and a collaborator of figures such as Erwin Piscator and Bertolt Brecht, George also founded the Schauspielertheater to broaden his artistic freedom. His career, however, became controversial after 1933: following a period of restrictions, he attained prestige under the Nazi regime, receiving official honors and assuming the directorship of the Schiller Theater, as well as taking part in propaganda productions.

At the end of the war he was detained by Soviet forces and transferred to special camps where he continued theatrical activity under precarious conditions. The combination of his prominent cultural role and collaboration with the Nazi regime left a disputed legacy, encompassing artistic recognition and moral controversy over his choices during that period.
