About
Hélène Smith, born Catherine-Elise Müller, was a Swiss medium who gained wide notoriety in the late 19th century for her spiritual manifestations and psychographic automatisms. She initially worked as a servant and, from 1891, joined spiritualist circles in Geneva, where she began to exhibit somnambulic trances, incorporations and written communications that attracted both scientific and public attention.
Under investigation by psychologist Théodore Flournoy, her manifestations — including multiple spiritual personalities, communications in supposedly unknown languages and an elaborate “Martian” language — were documented in Des Indes à la Planète Mars (1900). The body of texts, drawings and accounts of past lives and journeys to Mars became central to debates about mediumship, cryptomnesia and unconscious creativity.
Despite popular prestige and the interest of later researchers and artistic movements, Flournoy and others pointed to earthly influences in the descriptions and the linguistic construction attributed to Mars. Hélène Smith also became associated with the surrealist imagination as an inspiring figure for psychography and the exploration of the boundaries between imagination and mediated experience.
