About
H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was an American poet, novelist, and memoirist associated with the imagist movement alongside Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. She moved to London in 1911, where her publications and Pound’s patronage placed her at the center of English poetic modernism and established her as an influential creative voice in the early twentieth century.
Her poetry favors direct handling of the image, concision, and lexical economy—imagist principles she often applied to images of nature and to allusions from Greek mythology. Personal events, such as her brother’s death and the end of her marriage, imparted tones of solitude and emotional intensity to her work.
Beyond poetry, H.D. worked as a literary editor and contributed to modernist magazines, broadening her critical reach. In the 1930s she sought contact with Sigmund Freud for personal understanding, an experience that resonated in her intimate and essayistic writing.
Reappraised in subsequent decades, her work has also been read by feminist and LGBTQ+ movements, becoming noted for its candor about sexuality and for a legacy that combines formal rigor with subjective depth.
