About

Ignazio Benito Maria La Russa is an Italian politician with a long career in post‑fascist conservatism who has held prominent positions in the state and in party organizations. Trained as a lawyer and a former reserve officer, he built his career within the ranks of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) and its successors, rising to leadership roles in the National Alliance and later in The People of Freedom; he was one of the founders of the Brothers of Italy party, which he briefly led as interim president.

From 2008 to 2011 he served as Minister of Defence in Silvio Berlusconi’s fourth government, during which he supported the international intervention in Libya and promoted measures to enhance the institutional standing of the Armed Forces, such as establishing a memorial day for soldiers killed on peacekeeping missions and initiatives for managing Defence assets. He has also served as a parliamentary leader and as Vice President of the Senate in different terms.

Since 13 October 2022 he has served as President of the Senate of the Republic, becoming the second-ranking official of the Italian Republic. His public and family biography—rooted in a right‑wing political tradition in Sicily—and controversial episodes from his youth have fueled debate about his role and legacy in contemporary Italian politics.
