About

A Spanish infanta by birth and a Bavarian princess by marriage, Amalia Filipina de Bourbon played a discreet but influential role within the dynastic networks of the 19th century. The daughter of Infante Francisco de Paula and Luísa Carlota of the Two Sicilies, she grew up amid dynastic crises and exiles that marked the Spanish monarchy during the reign of Isabel II. Her upbringing at court was modest, and her family experienced removals from and returns to power throughout her childhood.

She married in 1856 to Prince Adalbert of Bavaria, joining the Bavarian royal household and settling in Munich, where she lived for the remainder of her life. The marriage produced five children, among them Ludwig Ferdinand, whose marriage to Infanta María de la Paz strengthened Spanish–Bavarian ties — an arrangement in which Amalia played a direct part.

Although not prominent as a political actor, she maintained strong ties to Spain, visiting the country and preserving the use of Spanish among her descendants. She died at Nymphenburg Palace in 1905 and was buried in the crypt of the Church of St. Michael, leaving a legacy of dynastic service and of sustaining family ties between the Iberian and Bavarian courts.
