About

Irina Paley was an aristocrat of Romanov origin who spent most of her life in France after going into exile following the Russian Revolution. The daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich and Princess Olga Paley, her childhood was divided between Paris and the imperial court in Saint Petersburg; revolutionary violence led to the deaths of her father and brother and forced the family to flee to Finland and later to France.

In Paris and Biarritz, Irina became part of the community of Russian exiles and devoted herself to social support initiatives: she maintained associations founded by her mother and in 1925 opened a school for Russian girls in Brunoy, later housed at Château Leroy. She married Prince Fyodor Alexandrovich in 1923, with whom she had a son, Mikhail; the marriage ended in divorce in 1936.

She later married Hubert Conquéré de Monbrison, settled in the Basque Country and converted to the Reformed faith. Over the years she was recognized for her work on behalf of the Russian emigrant community and for preserving the Romanov family memory among exile generations.
