Iwao Takamoto

About

Iwao Takamoto was an American animator, character designer, producer and director whose work deeply influenced twentieth‑century commercial animation. Trained in the craft while interned in Japanese American camps during World War II, he joined Walt Disney Productions in 1945 and contributed as an animator and designer to classics such as Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp and One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

After leaving Disney in 1961, Takamoto became a central figure at Hanna‑Barbera, where he designed much of the studio’s regular roster—including Scooby‑Doo, Astro and Penelope Pitstop—and took on production roles for series such as The Addams Family, Hong Kong Phooey and Jabberjaw. He directed the animated adaptation of Charlotte’s Web (1973) and later served as a supervising producer on projects that included Hanna‑Barbera’s transition into work with Warner Bros. Animation.

Honored with awards including the Winsor McCay Award and the Animation Guild’s Golden Award, Takamoto left a lasting legacy in character design and in shaping merchandising and visual identity for animation studios, remembered for balancing commercial appeal with drawing sensibility.
