About

Jacques Lucien Jean Delors was a French economist and politician who became known as President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995. Born into a modest family, he began his career at the Banque de France after World War II and studied economics at the Sorbonne before joining French government structures and the Socialist Party. He held ministerial posts, including Minister of the Economy and Finance in 1981, and had served in ministerial offices since 1969.

During his presidency of the European Commission, Delors played a central role in the integration process that culminated in the Treaty of Maastricht (1993), making decisive contributions to the project of building the European Union and to the consolidation of the single market. He received several international honors, including the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation (1989) and several honorary doctorates.

Author and organizer of significant reports on education, he took an important role in international initiatives such as the International Commission on Education for the Twenty‑first Century (UNESCO, 1996). He is also remembered for the institutional legacy he left within the European Union and for his influence on European public policy in the closing decades of the twentieth century.
