About

Jacques Tati (born Jacques Tatischeff) was a French artist whose career combined mime, acting, screenwriting and film directing, making him a distinctive figure in twentieth‑century European cinema. Coming from a family of Russian, Dutch and Italian origins, Tati began in the performing arts with miming numbers and physical routines — the Impressions Sportives — which brought him notice on the stages of Paris and Berlin before World War II.

His film work, though compact, was highly influential: he directed only six feature films but created the iconic character Monsieur Hulot, who stars in films such as Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Mon Oncle, Playtime and Trafic. Playtime in particular appears on many prestigious lists and is frequently cited among the great films for its visual architecture and subtle critique of modernity.

A critic of the pace and values of modern urban life, Tati explored physical comedy, silence and the long take to build an authorial cinema in which sound and space play expressive roles. His legacy endures in the admiration of filmmakers and critics, who regard him as an example of an auteur capable of conceiving a coherent vision of the world on film.
