About

James Jesus Angleton was an American intelligence officer who served as head of the CIA’s counterintelligence staff from 1954 to 1975. Trained in the humanities with an interest in literary criticism, he entered the service during World War II in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in London and Rome, and in 1947 became one of the CIA’s founding officers.

Promoted by Allen Dulles, Angleton gained authority within the agency and was regarded by colleagues, according to Director Richard Helms, as the leading counterintelligence figure in the non‑communist world. His work included handling sensitive defection cases such as those of Anatoliy Golitsyn and Yuri Nosenko, episodes that prompted him to conduct a long and controversial internal investigation in search of an alleged high‑level Soviet mole.

Angleton’s reputation rests both on his influence over six agency directors and on the central role he played in Cold War counterintelligence practices and procedures. His legacy remains disputed: admired by many in the intelligence community, he is also regarded by critics as responsible for internal investigations that had profound effects on operations and careers within the CIA.
