About
James Edward Lascelles is a British musician, known for performing as a keyboardist, percussionist and composer in rock, jazz and world-music projects. The son of the 7th Earl of Harewood, he trained in classical piano and drums and moved from jazz and blues into rock in the 1970s, notably as a cofounder of the Global Village Trucking Company — a band linked to the travelling communal music scene and the benefit-concert circuit of the time.
Global Village gained attention for its live performances and for appearing on the landmark recording Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls; their activity included communal living and touring that later led to reunions and appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury. After his time with the band, Lascelles worked as a session musician and joined The Breakfast Band, a jazz/funk group responsible for two albums and a hit single.
He later deepened his work in traditional and tribal music, making recordings in North America and Mexico and founding the label Tribal Music International. He maintains an active performing career — including work with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and his own projects such as Talking Spirit — and takes part in community initiatives aimed at children in vulnerable situations.
