About

Jane Addams was a central figure in social reform in the United States at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. An activist, social worker and pragmatic thinker, she became known for cofounding Hull House in Chicago in 1889, one of the largest settlement houses for immigrants and vulnerable populations, which provided education, health services and community programs.

Throughout her career, Addams argued for women’s participation in public administration, maintaining that issues related to public health, sanitation and child care should include women’s voices. Her work established her as a leader of the Progressive Era, shaping social policy and debates about welfare and participatory democracy.

She also made notable contributions to pacifism and civil rights: she helped found the ACLU in 1920 and, in 1931, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her contributions to peace and social service. Her legacy endures in the institutionalization of community work and in valuing public action informed by women’s everyday experience.
