About
Jane Bryan, born Jane O'Brien, was an American film actress whose brief career on screen drew attention between 1936 and 1940. Discovered by Warner Bros., she played notable roles in prestigious films alongside names such as Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, James Cagney and William Holden, appearing in titles including The Marked Woman, Kid Galahad, Each Dawn I Die and Invisible Stripes. Her presence in studio productions and friendships with co‑stars marked a short but noteworthy career.
In 1940 she left professional acting when she married businessman Justin Whitlock Dart, a key figure in building the Rexall chain and later business ventures. The couple became politically prominent as Republican supporters and personal friends of Ronald Reagan, whose entry into politics was influenced by that circle.
Later, Bryan devoted herself to public activities outside cinema, serving on the United States Commission of Fine Arts (1971–1976) and becoming involved with museums and archaeology, at one point directing the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. She died in 2009, leaving a legacy tied both to the golden age of cinema and to civic and cultural engagement.
