About

Jean Anouilh was one of the most influential French playwrights of the post–World War II period, with a career spanning five decades. Working between serious drama and farce, Anouilh rose to prominence with his version of Antigone (1944), a play read in occupied France as a political parable about moral integrity in the face of collaborationist governments.

His work is marked by tightly constructed plots and eloquent dialogue, less experimental than some of his contemporaries, and by a recurring reflection on preserving integrity in a world of ethical compromise. Over the course of his career he grouped his plays into cycles — “black plays,” tragic and existential; “pink plays,” more fanciful and light; and other categories that emphasize bright or mordant tones.

Beyond Antigone, his legacy includes titles such as The Traveller Without Luggage, The Skylark and Ring Round the Moon. His influence stems both from his prolific theatrical output and his continuous presence on the Parisian stage, where he collaborated with directors and designers who helped secure his place in twentieth‑century French theatre.
