About

Jean-Claude Casadesus is a French conductor and percussionist, best known for founding and leading the Orchestre national de Lille from 1972 to 2016. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won several first prizes in percussion, timpani, counterpoint and fugue, Casadesus also completed advanced studies at the Sorbonne and a doctorate on Hector Berlioz, building a career that combines instrumental practice, conducting and musicological reflection.

Over the decades he has worked in major houses and festivals — from the Comédie-Française and the Théâtre du Châtelet to Pierre Boulez’s Domaine musical — and held positions in military music, eventually commanding the music of the Armée de Terre. His international career includes invitations from conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and La Fenice.

Casadesus’s legacy is marked by the creation of a pioneering regional institution funded by the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and the state, aimed at democratizing access to classical music and offering a broad program — from symphonic repertoire to operas and festivals such as Lille Piano(s). Charitable projects and performances in difficult historical contexts also underscore his civic and cultural commitment.
