About

Jean Sorel, born Jean Bernard de Chieusses de Combaud de Roquebrune, is a French actor whose career was established mainly in European cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. Of aristocratic background, he became known early as a leading man, often compared to Alain Delon, and worked with prominent directors such as Luis Buñuel, Luchino Visconti, Roger Vadim and Sidney Lumet.

After his debut in 1957, Sorel gained recognition in Italy from 1960 onward with roles in films by Alberto Lattuada and Mauro Bolognini. He appeared in notable titles such as Belle de jour, The Man Who Laughs and A View from the Bridge, alternating among dramas, romances and auteur films that consolidated his presence on the European circuit.

In the late 1960s he moved frequently into the giallo genre, appearing in films by Lucio Fulci and other suspense and horror directors, which brought him visibility with international audiences in that niche. From 1980 he focused his work on television and theatre, maintaining steady activity in the performing arts.

His career is remembered for its range between art-house cinema and popular genres, as well as his collaborations with influential filmmakers of the period; in 2011 he was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.
