About

Jeanne Loviton, better known by her pen name Jean Voilier, was a French lawyer, publisher and novelist prominent in twentieth‑century cultural circles. Trained in law, she served as legal counsel and worked alongside respected jurists before turning to journalism and fiction. She published novels such as Beauté raison majeure (1936), Jours de lumière (1938) and Ville ouverte (1942), and was also active in publishing through the Domat‑Montchrestien editions.

Highly visible in society, she was a central figure in Parisian literary circles and maintained personal and intellectual ties with writers such as Paul Valéry, whose correspondence with her forms a significant part of her legacy. For decades the owner of the Château de Béduer, her public life combined writing, editorial management and social prominence, contributing to her notoriety.

Her career includes controversial episodes connected to the 1945 murder of the publisher Robert Denoël, in which she was a witness and later became embroiled in judicial disputes over publishing negotiations; the matter remained a source of controversy. Her papers and her connections with major literary figures secure her place in French cultural history.
