Jeffrey MacDonald

About

Jeffrey Robert MacDonald is an American physician and former Army captain, best known for the criminal case that involved him. In 1970, while serving as a Special Forces physician, his pregnant wife and two daughters were killed in the family apartment at Fort Bragg; MacDonald was convicted in August 1979 of the murders. He has always denied committing the crimes and maintained that four intruders—three men and a woman—broke into the residence and carried out the killings, a version he sustained throughout appeals and subsequent proceedings.

Prosecutors and appellate courts pointed to physical evidence that supported the conviction, and the case became one of the most litigated in U.S. criminal history, drawing extensive media coverage and debates over forensic science and legal procedures. MacDonald served time in federal institutions and, as far as is known, remains incarcerated.

Before the incident, MacDonald had an academic and military career that included an undergraduate degree from Princeton, a medical degree from Northwestern, and service as a physician with Special Forces units. His personal background—from growing up on Long Island to marriage and fatherhood—frequently appears in accounts of the case, which also emphasize the lasting impact on relatives, neighbors, and the military community.
