About
Jeremias Gotthelf was the pen name of Albert Bitzius, a Swiss Protestant pastor and novelist associated with the Biedermeier movement. Born into a clerical family in the canton of Bern, he spent his adult life serving as a parish priest in Lützelflüh, in the Emmental, where he closely observed rural life that he later transformed into fiction. His career included participation in student circles and theological training in Göttingen, followed by a long pastoral ministry that influenced his literary output.
Bitzius began publishing relatively late; his first success was Der Bauernspiegel (1837), presented as the life of “Jeremias Gotthelf,” the pseudonym he would permanently adopt. His narratives blend rural realism, regional language, and moral concern, portraying both the virtues and the faults of the peasant communities of the Bernese Valley.
Among his best-known works is Die schwarze Spinne (The Black Spider), an allegorical tale about plague and moral decay, as well as novels such as Uli der Knecht and Uli der Pächter. His writings, issued in posthumous collections, established him as an important figure in German-language literature and left a lasting legacy in the representation of Swiss pastoral and rural life.
