About

Jerry Mathers is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver on the sitcom Leave It to Beaver (1957–1963). As the show's child lead, he appeared in all 234 episodes and became one of the first child actors to negotiate a share of merchandising revenue, a deal that contributed to his fame and provided ongoing income as the series was widely rebroadcast in dozens of countries.

Before Beaver, he acted in films in the 1950s, including Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry. After his child-actor years he stepped back to finish his education, served in the California Air National Guard, and graduated in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973. He then worked in banking and real estate development, supported by savings from his acting career.

In the late 1970s he returned to performing, appearing in stage productions and on television, and in 1983 he reprised the role in Still the Beaver, which led to the series The New Leave It to Beaver. Over the ensuing decades he also published memoirs and served as a spokesperson in health campaigns, maintaining a legacy tied to American television culture and the iconic figure of the “Beaver.”
