Tex Schramm

About

Tex Schramm was an executive in professional American football, known as the original president and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys when the franchise began operations in 1960. Under his leadership he hired Tom Landry and Gil Brandt, forming the trio responsible for turning the team into an NFL power in the 1960s and 1970s, with multiple Super Bowl appearances and titles that established the Cowboys as a nationally prominent franchise.

As an influential league executive, Schramm took part in the negotiations that led to the NFL–AFL merger and introduced traditions and innovations that modernized the sport: support for instant replay, use of technology in scouting, game clocks on scoreboards, headsets for quarterbacks, and the creation of the format that became the annual scouting combine. He also formalized the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day appearances, making them a team hallmark.

A figure of substantial executive authority, he exercised powers often associated with owners and acted decisively in labor disputes, a stance that provoked controversy and affected the team’s on-field results. After leaving the club following an ownership change, he served as president of the World League of American Football and was later honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
