About

Jerry Lyle Pettis was an American politician who served four terms as a Republican congressman representing districts in California from 1967 to 1975. He became known as a public figure for combining his political career with work as a farmer, teacher, pilot and businessman, and for being the first member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to serve in the U.S. Congress.

A graduate of Pacific Union College with postgraduate studies at the University of Southern California and the University of Denver, Pettis served as an aviator in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and later worked as a commercial pilot. In the House, he took part in California politics in the 1960s and 1970s and was reelected repeatedly until his death.

Pettis died in 1975 in an airplane crash while piloting his aircraft. His institutional legacy includes the naming of the Jerry Pettis Memorial VA hospital in Loma Linda and the preservation of his congressional papers in a university archive. His widow, Shirley Neil Pettis, won the special election that filled the seat he left.
