About
Jess Collins, known simply as Jess, was an American visual artist whose work became a touchstone in San Francisco’s post–World War II art scene. Trained at the California School of the Arts, he left a scientific career — which included work on the Manhattan Project and the Hanford Atomic Energy Project — to devote himself fully to art, driven by his concern about nuclear weapons.
His output ranges from densely worked paintings and complex collages to murals, often drawing on chemistry, alchemy, occultism and ideas of masculine beauty. He became known for his “paste-ups”: narrative collages that recombine scientific illustrations, popular magazines, comics and highbrow images into meticulous, symbolic assemblies.
Jess was at the center of San Francisco’s artistic and literary circles, living and collaborating with the poet Robert Duncan for nearly four decades and participating in alternative spaces such as the King Ubu Gallery/Six Gallery. Over his career he had solo exhibitions at major institutions in the United States and Europe, and his work is held in museum collections including MoMA, SFMOMA, the Whitney and the Met.
His legacy is that of a singular creator whose visual poetics and ties to the poetic-artistic community helped shape a Californian tradition characterized by imagination, experimentation and a culturally engaged outlook.
