About

Jimmy Carter was an American politician and philanthropist who served as the 39th President of the United States (1977–1981). Born into a family of peanut farmers in Georgia, he graduated from the Naval Academy and served as a Navy officer before returning to farming and entering state politics, where he served in the state senate and as governor of Georgia.

In the federal government, his administration created the Departments of Energy and Education and pursued a national energy policy focused on conservation and innovation. In foreign policy, he was noted for the Camp David Accords and the treaty that returned control of the Panama Canal to Panama, as well as for arms‑control initiatives (SALT II).

His term faced economic difficulties and international crises, including the Iran hostage crisis and the 1979 energy crisis, factors that contributed to his defeat in the 1980 reelection bid. After leaving the White House, Carter devoted himself to humanitarian and human‑rights causes, mediating peace agreements, observing elections and fighting disease in many countries, activities that reinforced his public legacy.
