John Anthony West

About

John Anthony West was an American author and lecturer known for advocating alternative hypotheses about Ancient Egypt, in particular the water-erosion theory for the Great Sphinx. He began his career as an advertising copywriter and science fiction writer—receiving an honorable mention at the 1962 Hugo Awards—before turning, from the 1970s onward, to non-fiction works that reinterpreted the chronology and technology of the ancient world.

His book Serpent in the Sky (1979) extended ideas of Schwaller de Lubicz and argued that the Sphinx had been carved long before the traditional dynastic period, a claim that led him to collaborate with geologist Robert M. Schoch. Their joint work reached a wide audience with the television documentary The Mystery of the Sphinx (1993), which received an award for investigative journalism.

West’s positions were controversial: mainstream scholars criticized the lack of scientific evidence and the speculative nature of his conclusions. Nevertheless, his work as a public communicator influenced popular debate over the dating and interpretation of Egyptian monuments, leaving a mark at the intersection of popularization, alternative theory, and public interest in antiquity.
