About

John Bowden Connally Jr. was a Texas politician, lawyer, and businessman who played a prominent role in state and national politics from the 1950s through the 1980s. A law graduate of the University of Texas and a Navy veteran of World War II, he belonged to the moderate wing of the Texas Democratic Party and became one of Lyndon Johnson’s close associates. In 1961 he was appointed Secretary of the Navy in the Kennedy administration, but resigned after being elected governor of Texas in 1962, a post he held until 1969.

Connally gained national notoriety when he was wounded in the assassination that killed John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963; throughout his life he rejected conspiracy theories about the case. In 1971 he joined Richard Nixon’s Republican administration as Secretary of the Treasury, serving until 1973. That year he formally changed parties and became a Republican.

He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1980 but failed to overcome Ronald Reagan in the primaries. His career combined legal work, state executive office, and federal ministries, leaving a controversial and highly visible imprint on postwar American politics.
