About

John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was one of the most influential American novelists of the twentieth century, noted for his realistic portrayals of workers and migrants in California. He achieved fame with The Grapes of Wrath (1939), a masterpiece that exposes exploitation and dehumanization during the Great Depression and won him the Pulitzer Prize; other important works include Of Mice and Men (1937) and East of Eden (1952).

His writing blends social concern, allegorical symbolism, and vivid characters, reflecting early literary influences and his experiences in the Salinas region. Much of his work was adapted for film—around seventeen adaptations—and he also worked on screenplays, earning an Academy Award nomination in 1944.

In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognizing his power to combine narrative drive with social commitment. Steinbeck’s legacy endures in both his books and their film adaptations, keeping him a touchstone for representations of the socioeconomic tensions in mid-twentieth-century America.
