John le Carré, the pen name of David John Moore Cornwell, was one of the most influential post‑war spy novelists. Educated at Oxford and having served in the diplomatic service and British intelligence, he drew on that experience to craft stories focused on moral ambiguity and the workings of state intelligence, often set during the Cold War.
His novels, several of which were successfully adapted for film and television, examined both the climate of mistrust between states and the human fallout from covert operations. After the Cold War ended he refreshed his concerns, tackling terrorism, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the global political and economic repercussions, while retaining the sober, critical tone that defines his writing.
