John Watts Young was an American astronaut whose career spanned the Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle eras, and who remains the only American to have flown in all three types of spacecraft. Trained in flight technology at Georgia Tech, he joined the Navy and distinguished himself as a test pilot before being selected by NASA in 1962. In the Gemini program he commanded pioneering rendezvous and extravehicular activity missions, serving as pilot on the historic Gemini 3.
In the Apollo program Young held key roles: command module pilot on Apollo 10, the full dress rehearsal for the lunar landing, and commander of Apollo 16, when he became the ninth man to walk on the Moon. He also served frequently as Capcom and on backup crews, contributing to operations and flight procedures during a period of rapid expansion in lunar exploration.
After Apollo he took on administrative roles in the Office of the Astronaut and helped shape the development of the Space Shuttle. In 1981 he commanded the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Columbia (STS‑1), testing the new vehicle’s systems in orbit. His legacy combines exceptional operational experience, technical leadership and a central role in the transition between generations of human spaceflight.
