About

Johnny Miller (John Lawrence Miller) is a former American professional golfer recognized as one of the world’s best players in the 1970s. A winner of 25 PGA Tour events, he was noted for his iron play and for landmark achievements: he won the 1973 U.S. Open with a historic 63 in the final round — the first time such a low score decided a major — and claimed the 1976 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

At his peak, Miller led the money list in 1974 with eight victories and a then-record total, and he maintained top-level form with several high finishes in majors, establishing himself alongside names such as Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros. His career, however, suffered a difficult spell in the late 1970s due to the putting “yips,” from which he recovered to win again in the early 1980s.

After ending his competitive season play, Miller served as the lead golf commentator for NBC Sports from 1990 to 2019 and worked as a golf course architect. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, in recognition of his competitive legacy and lasting influence on the sport.
