About

John Franklin "Johnny" Sain was a right-handed pitcher in American professional baseball who rose to prominence as half of a pitching duo with left-hander Warren Spahn on the postwar Boston Braves. A key figure in the Braves’ drive to the National League title in 1948, Sain led the league in wins, complete games and innings pitched and finished second in the MVP voting that year. His performance included a victory in Game 1 of the 1948 World Series.

Over 11 Major League seasons he compiled 139 wins and a 3.49 ERA, also serving as a reliever in the later stages of his career, when he led the American League in saves in 1954. Before his full professional career he served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After retiring as a player, Sain became one of the most respected and influential pitching coaches in the league, working for several franchises and helping develop numerous pitchers who went on to win 20 games. Known for independent methods and for creating devices to study ball spin, he left a legacy of technical innovation and teaching on the mound.

Personal life: he was married twice and suffered a stroke in 2002 that left him debilitated in his final years.
