About

José Clemente Orozco was one of the leading Mexican painters of the 20th century and a central figure of Mexican Muralism, alongside Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros. Known for his large-scale murals, he articulated a critical view of the Revolution and its social contradictions, placing the people's struggle and the search for a new social order at the center of his work.

In addition to frescoes, he worked in easel painting, watercolor, drawing and caricature—the latter often serving as a means of livelihood—showing a technical versatility that ranged from realism and expressionism to references to Italian Renaissance painting. Between 1922 and 1949 he produced roughly 4,700 m² of murals in 21 buildings in Mexico and the United States, which cemented his public presence and his intent to bring art to the people.

His compositions are notable for their dramatic force, formal intensity and the use of monumental figures to express conflict and collective suffering. Works such as Prometheus and other mural paintings became benchmarks of the movement, influencing later generations and defining the muralist legacy as art of social intervention.
