Joseph H. Pilates

About

Joseph Hubertus Pilates was a fitness instructor and the inventor of the method now known as Pilates, which he originally called Contrology. Born in Germany, he devised a system of exercises focused on strengthening, body awareness, and rehabilitation, and he also developed various support apparatuses — including a predecessor to the Reformer and the device known as the Foot Corrector, both patented in the 1920s.

Throughout his life he combined work as a teacher, boxing trainer, and practitioner of natural medicine, influencing dancers and health professionals in Europe and, above all, in New York City, where he emigrated in 1926. In the studio he opened in Manhattan he refined the equipment and formalized exercise sequences that attracted students from diverse backgrounds, including figures from the arts.

Pilates’s legacy lies in the worldwide spread of his method — both the practice of the exercises and the use of the apparatuses he designed — and in the continued presence of these techniques in contemporary rehabilitation, dance, and fitness studios.
