Joseph Pulitzer was a Hungarian-American editor and journalist who reshaped American journalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Arriving in the United States as a young man, he began working on German-language newsrooms in St. Louis and progressed to buy the New York World in 1883, where he championed a “truly democratic” press aimed at the working classes. Pulitzer combined vigorous investigative reporting on political corruption and economic power with press innovations — heavy use of images, eye-catching headlines, specialty pages, and coverage of crime and sports — practices that brought newspapers closer to immigrants and the working class but also drew criticism for sensationalism (the so-called “yellow journalism”). A believer that the press is a public service, he led investigations with political impact, such as exposing irregular payments related to the Panama Canal, and in 1903 funded the creation of a journalism school at Columbia University. His institutional legacy includes the Pulitzer Prizes, established after his death to encourage excellence in journalism and literature.
