About

Jules Joseph Bonnot was a French worker and former soldier who gained notoriety in the early 20th century after embracing illegalist anarchism and leading the group the press called the Bonnot Gang. Trained as a mechanic and a sharpshooter during his military service, Bonnot applied his technical skills and knowledge of automobiles to a series of crimes combining thefts, forgeries and robberies of homes and luxury vehicles.

His personal history—shaped by a precarious childhood, episodes of imprisonment and involvement with labor movements—brought him into revolutionary circles and small bands specializing in offenses that exploited the era’s new technologies, such as the automobile. He used disguises and deception to infiltrate wealthy circles, earning him the ironic nickname “Le Bourgeois.”

The actions of his group had a major impact in France, fueling debates about political crime, anarchism and public security. The myth surrounding Bonnot and his gang influenced the imagery of violent anarchism and left a lasting mark on the social and journalistic memory of the period.
