About
Jules Alfred Huot de Goncourt was a French writer and historian best known for his close collaboration with his brother Edmond. Trained in classical studies, the brothers became specialists in 18th‑century art, assembling a significant collection of objects and, beginning in 1856, publishing the series L’Art du XVIIIe Siècle, a critical work that systematized aspects of the material culture and taste of the period.
In the 1860s they turned to literature, producing novels with a naturalistic tone that anticipated later social concerns. Germinie Lacerteux (1864), based on a real case, is recognized as one of the first French narratives to portray working‑class life in a realistic manner. The brothers also kept an extensive personal and intellectual diary, a valuable source on the literary and artistic circles of the Second Empire.
Jules’s early death in 1870 ended the partnership; Edmond continued to publish their joint works and diaries, consolidating the duo’s influence. The cultural prestige of their name endures: the Prix Goncourt, established in their honor, became one of France’s most important literary prizes.
