About
Jules-Henri Desfourneaux was the French chief executioner known for presiding over the country’s last public executions and for serving as Monsieur de Paris from 1939 to 1951. Born into a family with a long tradition in the trade, Desfourneaux took part in about 350 executions over his career, serving as the principal executioner for roughly 190 of them.
His appointment followed the death of Anatole Deibler and came at a tense moment: the last public executions in 1939 — including that of Eugène Weidmann, widely filmed and linked to the government’s decision to end public beheadings — definitively marked a change in penal practice in France. During World War II his conduct provoked controversy, especially because he carried out orders from the Vichy regime, leading some assistants to resign.
Beyond the professional dimension, Desfourneaux played a significant role in the institutional transition of the office, since his tenure coincided with the centralization and regulation of executions in the modern period. The legacy attributed to him relates more to the public function and to the legal and social transformations his practice helped bring about than to personal or political notes.
