About

Julius Winfield Erving II, known as Dr. J, is one of the greatest players in American basketball history. His career helped establish the credibility of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and shone during the leagues’ merger with the NBA. A standout in the 1970s and 1980s, Erving won three championships across the ABA and NBA, was a four-time regular-season MVP, and finished as one of the leading scorers in combined ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points.

His professional career included transformative stints with the Virginia Squires, New York Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers, where he became a team leader and a technical and media reference. In 1973–74 he led the Nets to the ABA title and, after the move to the NBA, was the centerpiece of the Sixers in a notable campaign that restored prestige to the franchise. Erving was also the only player to receive MVP votes in both the ABA and the NBA.

Known for his athletic style and cultural impact, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team. His legacy combines individual achievements, influence on the professionalization of the leagues, and a lasting presence in the sport’s imagination.
